St Erth Praze is a hamlet in west Cornwall on the B3302 road east of St Erth. This profile of St Erth Praze Wesleyan Chapel has been compiled by Jo Lewis and Tony Mansell.

 

A Wesleyan Methodist chapel is recorded in the 1851 Religious Census and on the 1st and 2nd Edition 1:2500 1880 and 1907 OS Maps. It has now been converted into a bungalow (b2). (Cornwall Heritage Gateway)

Taking Steppy Downs Road and heading west from the B3302 through St Erth Praze and the old chapel is on the right.

1851: Possible build date. (Cornwall Heritage Gateway / Checklist of Churches in the Hayle Circuit on the 31st August 1961)

Built as a Wesleyan Chapel. (SWChurches)

1856: Lease which implies the chapel is already built.

1901: “St Erth Wesleyan Band of Hope on Saturday afternoon, held its annual tea. Headed by the Deveral Brass Band, under Mr Thomas Pascoe, the members (numbering about 170) marched round the village. …” (30 May 1901 – Royal Cornwall Gazette)

1928: “… St Erth Band of Hope, large gathering met in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, and afterwards paraded the village, headed by the St Erth Silver Band. Tea was served in the schoolroom from 4 to 6 p.m., and was well attended…” (13 June 1928 – Cornishman)

1932: The Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and the United Methodist Church amalgamated to become the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

1932: Became St Erth Praze Methodist Church. (SWChurches)

1937: “St. Erth Band of Hope held their tea treat on Saturday. The Hayle Silver Band was in attendance.” (17 June 1937 – Cornishman)

1940: Seating for 115. (David Easton, Methodist Minister and historian)

29 Aug 1956: Lease, land with Jericho Chapel, St Erth Praze, Hayle. Parties: 1) John Cecil Trownson, farmer, of Jericho Farm, Hayle; Nanny Thomas Trownson of Block 2, 8 Lethlean Estate, Hayle. 2) Trustees of chapel (named). Land at St Erth Praze, Hayle with Jericho Chapel and land adjoining with coalhouse. Term: 5 years. Rent: £40 or £3 if paid when due. Recites: lease of 29 Sep 1857. (Kresen Kernow MRIHY/138)
