Highway is an area to the east of Redruth. This profile of Redruth Highway Primitive Methodist Chapel has been compiled by Jo Lewis and Tony Mansell.

 

Heading north on the A393, take the right fork into Highway Lane. As it becomes Redruth Highway, the Primitive Methodist is on the right.

Primitive Methodist chapel, built 1835. Recorded on the 1st and 2nd Editions of the 1:2500 1880 and 1907 OS Maps. Now used as a village hall. (Cornwall Council Heritage Gateway)

24 Nov 1836: Mortgage, site for Redruth Highway Primitive Methodist Chapel. Parties: 1) Samuel Trevena, Thomas Williams, Thomas Trenwith, John Harris, Thomas Hugo, William Harris, all miners; Paul Raby, mine agent; John Osborne, shoemaker; Richard Harris Moreton, builder, all Redruth. 2) Elizabeth Uren of Redruth. Land measuring 40×27 feet on Redruth Highway on which a Primitive Methodist chapel is being built. Recites 99 year lease of 3 June 1805 by Alexander Teague to party 1. Mortgage for £35. 1884: “Redruth Highway Primitive Methodist Sunday School annual treat was held on Saturday. Prior to the tea, the members of the school walked to Redruth. Lelant Brass Band was in attendance. The usual games were supplemented by foot racing, for small prizes. …” (8 August 1884 – Cornubian and Redruth Times)

I have found a silver coloured key with the following engraved on it.
“Redruth Highway P.M.Church” and the the reverse “Re-Opened April 23rd 1914 by Mr W. Moore” – Mr W Moore is one of my ancestors as by Grandfather was Thomas Donald Moore and was from Redruth born c1896.
