Terry Harry
Terry was born in St Day and first picked up a camera in Redruth County Grammar School. He was lucky enough to have excellent employment until he decided to go self-employed as a professional photographer. Terry’s uncle was BBC’s Television Gardener, Don Hoyle, who got Terry to do a few photographic jobs which ultimately led to an unexpected cheque from the BBC. This helped enormously when he was looking for contracts in photography as he could say he had done work for the BBC. “Thanks Uncle Don!”
He has had a blessed career in photography having covered hundreds of weddings, lots of press work, often meeting famous people, covering Royal visits to the area, sport and commercial work for many companies. Terry was involved in starting Cornwall Today magazine in the 1990s and also started Cornwall Yesteryear website in 2020 which was aimed at helping people during the covid pandemic and lockdown. It has been highly successful with around 100,000 visitors and did what it was designed for, free of charge to everyone.
You will see from the photographs a very mixed bag of different types of subjects. Of course, there are many of his favourite landscapes of his beloved Cornwall. There are a couple of shots taken at Wembley Arena where Terry worked in the early 2000s. He also had the honour of working with the Olympic Torch which went through Cornwall and covered its route across Truro in 2012. (The Torch bearer is Barry Symons from Truro)
Terry is now retired and often can be seen going around with his loved Canon cameras taking photos purely for enjoyment. You can also see that Terry loves wildlife and photographs anything he can capture. He also concentrates on taking photos to accompany his wife Ruth Tremayne Harry’s poems and their books.
