Mapping Methodism – Trescowe United Methodist Free Church

Trescowe is a hamlet north of Germoe. This profile of Trescowe UMFC has been compiled by Jo Lewis and Tony Mansell.

 

A United Methodist chapel is recorded on the 1st 1:2500 1880 OS Map and shown as a Free United chapel on the 2nd Edition 1907 OS Map. The building is shown on the current Mastermap and has been converted to a dwelling. (Cornwall Council Heritage Gateway)

On the right as you descend into the village it is almost opposite the Millpool Road.

There is an old arch with steps on the site (shown) which may be part of the old church and the house (which may be a conversion or new build) has a plaque (shown) dated 1865.

1 Feb 1864: Lease, United Methodist Free Church chapel, Trescowe, Breage . Parties: 1) Thomas Alexander Fraser, baron Lovat, The Right Honourable Granville George, Earl Granville, Mark Millbank of Thorp Perrow, Bedale, Yorkshire, esquire, and The Reverend George Townsend Hudson of Harthill, Yorkshire, trustees of the will of Francis Godolphin D’arcy, Duke of Leeds. 2) George Godolphin Osborne, Duke of Leeds. 3) William Treloar of Trescaw [Trescowe], Breage, grocer, John Russell of the same, miner, and Joseph Williams of the same, yeoman. 1) and 2) to 3). Term: 60 years. Rent: 5 shillings. Plot of waste land 90 feet west to east, 50 feet south to north, at the south west end of the village of Trescaw [Trescowe], and adjoining the highway, on part of which a chapel is now being erected by the United Methodist Free Church. 1907: The Methodist New Connexion, Bible Christians and United Methodist Free Churches amalgamated to become the United Methodist Church.
