Releath is a hamlet southwest of Burras in west Cornwall, This profile of Releath Wesleyan Chapel has been compiled by Jo Lewis and Tony Mansell.

 

Releath is northwest of Bodilly.

 

Earlier Chapel

The only reference found is in the 1861 registration document.

 

1861 Chapel

October 2008: We assume that the original chapel is to the left and the wing to the right was added in 1933 (Photo: Terry Knight)

1861: Build or registration date.

Built as a Wesleyan chapel. (SWChurches)

28 Jan 1861: Certificate of registration, Releath Wesleyan Chapel, Crowan. Certificate of registration as place of religious worship. Registered 19 February 1861. Endorsed ‘for old chapel, cancelled by new one’. (Kresen Kernow MRH/515)

1880: Chapel repairs undertaken. (The Cornish Telegraph – Thursday 28 October 1880)

1932: The Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and the United Methodist Church amalgamated to become the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

1932: Became Releath Methodist Church.

1933: The datestone suggests that the wing of the building to the right was built at this time.

1940: Seating for 85. (David Easton, Methodist Minister and historian)

1947: Chapel re-decorated. (Cornishman – Thursday 12 June 1947)

1959: Registered for marriages. (West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser – Thursday 13 August 1959)

1995: Closure date. (David Easton, Methodist Minister and historian)

Google maps show as disused.

Circa 1998: Releath congregation joined with Porkellis and Crelly to form the Trinity Fellowship, worshipping at the Porkellis Chapel.

2009: It was the 11th anniversary of the worshipping together of Releath, Crelly and Porkellis chapels, forming the Trinity Fellowship. (The Packet 21st April 2009)
