Drift is a village on the A30 road in west Cornwall approximately two miles west of Penzance and six miles from Land’s End. Jo Lewis and Tony Mansell have compiled this profile of Lower Drift Bible Christian Chapel.

 

5 Dec 1862: Surrender, chapel or meeting house, Lower Drift, Sancreed. (Kresen Kernow AD2651/12) Possibly an earlier chapel.

DRIFT – Post Medieval nonconformist chapel. Small Methodist chapel with attached probable Sunday school, all now converted to house. Simple early C19 vernacular example built of granite moorstone. Late C20 porch in front. (Heritage Gateway)

1876: “The anniversary of Drift Bible Christian Sunday School was celebrated on Good Friday. Trewellard Brass Band was in attendance and played admirably. Upwards of 70 children and 130 adults partook the tea and cake provided…” (2 May 1876 – The Cornish Telegraph)

1878: Anniversary Services held. (The Cornish Telegraph – Tuesday 24 September 1878)

1893: Kelly’s Directory notes Bible Christians in Drift.

1890s: There are records of trustees.

1898: Chapel renovated. (The Cornish Telegraph – Thursday 24 March 1898)

1907: The Methodist New Connexion, Bible Christians and United Methodist Free Churches amalgamated to become the United Methodist Church.

1907: Became Drift United Methodist Church. (SWChurches)

1914: Chapel thoroughly renovated. (The Cornish Telegraph – Thursday 26 March 1914)

1932: The Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and the United Methodist Church amalgamated to become the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

1932: Became Drift Methodist Church (SWChurches)

13 Jun 1941: Tender, electrical installation for Drift Methodist Church, Sancreed. Tender for £1810 shillings, from Cornwall Electric Power Company. Found loose in MRPZ/504. (Kresen Kernow MRPZ/507)
