Nancegollan is a village on the B3303 road and south-east of Leedstown. The railway line from Helston to Hayle passed through the village (closed in 1964). Nancegollan station was the largest of the four stations on the branch. This profile of Nancegollan Wesleyan Chapel has been compiled by Jo Lewis and Tony Mansell,

 

1813 Chapel

1859 Chapel

A Wesleyan chapel plus schoolroom at the rear, survives on the site of an 1813 chapel in Nancegollan. 1859 chapel extended and remodelled 1901. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Pedimented front end; 3-bay loggia porch; pair of doorways with panelled doors; margin panes to arched windows. Good forecourt walls with iron railings. Interior not inspected. 1901: “The trustees of Nancegollan Wesleyan Chapel desire TENDERS for new Sunday school, to be built adjoining above chapel. Plans and specifications to be seen at Nancegollan. Sealed tenders for masonry and carpentry work to be sent, separate, to the secretary of trust, on or before 22nd of April. The lowest, or any tender not necessarily accepted. (Signed) VIVIAN REYNOLDS, sec. of trust, Nancegollan.” (Cornishman – Thursday 18 April 1901)

1909: Raising funds for renovating interior of chapel. (Cornishman – Thursday 22 July 1909)

1932: The Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and the United Methodist Church amalgamated to become the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

1932: Became Nancegollan Methodist Church. (SWChurches)

1940: Seating for 170. (David Easton, Methodist Minister and historian)

1949: Nancegollan Chapel Re-opened: Nancegollan Methodist Church was reopened on Friday following extensive renovations and redecorating at a cost of nearly £700…” (Cornishman – Thursday 30 June 1949)

Correspondences suggests it had alterations and improvements (1987) but closed in 1992.

Jan 1996: Correspondence, graveyard at Nancegollan Chapel. Copy of letter from the Parish Council and reply from Reverend Allan Bailey of Mount’s Bay Methodist Circuit regarding the arrangements for the future upkeep of the graveyard at Nancegollan Chapel which is in the process of being sold. 1996/97: Purchased by the village as the village hall.
