Short Story Competition 2019

Categories Fiction2 Comments

Cornish Story is pleased to announce the winners of the recent short fiction competition that was announced at the annual conference of the Institute of Cornish Studies on Saturday 28 September at the Chapel Lecture Theatre on Penryn Campus.

The 2019 winners were:

Distinction – Kiera Smitheram

Merit – Kate Mole

Merit – Evie Payne

The four judges were impressed by the quality of the entries and it is envisaged that this event will become a regular feature of our activities. We were fairly relaxed on much of the criteria, only asking that stories were inspired by Cornish culture, whether that be in the present day or at some point in Cornwall’s rich history. This year’s event was launched to coincide with the release of Alan M. Kent’s new book Turning Serpentine. The winner receives a signed copy of the book, one year’s associate membership of the Institute of Cornish Studies; a framed certificate and have their story published on the Cornish Story website. There were two merit awards consisting of a framed certificate, one year’s associate membership of Cornish Studies (PDF)* and their Short Story to be published online. It is envisaged that quality submissions to the competition will be eventually published in a physical format as Cornish Story develops into a broadly-based publications programme supporting the on-going work of the Institute and other organisations and individuals working in the general field of Cornish Studies.

*Both ICS membership prizes are identical with the exception that the winner will receive a hardcopy of the annual edition of Cornish Studies, whereas runners-up will receive a PDF copy via email.
